The first Pierce custom cab was the Arrow, introduced in 1979. Prior to the Arrow cab, Pierce based their apparatus on either commercial chassis or custom chassis such as Oshkosh, Duplex, PemFab, and Hendrickson. The Arrow was the classic 5-man canopy cab design having the motor located between the jump seats with room for three up front. Very early Arrows were built on Oshkosh chassis until the Pierce chassis plant was complete. Early Arrows used larger, squared-off headlight trim, compared to the ones used later. The second style of trim was introduced during 1983. Until the early '90's, the Arrow front doors were cut at an angle and did not follow the contour of the wheel-well. Around that time, the cab was modified to use the same doors as the other cabs. The enclosed cab, previously optional, became standard in 1991. To achieve better cooling and performance, a grill was optional beginning in 1994. On models equipped with it, a large tunnel separated the driver from the officer. Beginning in 1995, a raised roof of up to twenty inches was made optional. | |||
